Sierra Nevada area guide: Europe's southernmost winter sports resort
A mystical land of mountains and that most un-Spanish of natural phenomenons – snow - Sierra Nevada has a reputation as something of a second-rate ski resort. How, naysayers ask, can one enjoy decent skiing in the south of Spain? A preposterous notion for the uninitiated, and it’s a mindset that pervades farther and wider than you might think.
Even with its reliable dustings of the white stuff each winter, there still exists an attitude that the Spanish don’t ‘do’ skiing. They ‘go’ skiing, sure, but will head across the border to France, or swallow their pride and swell the coffers of those mistrusted Italians. But skiing actually IN Spain? Well that’s just silly, right?
