HOT Attractions - The Chill Factor
As summer temperatures soar, in Southern Spain the coolest place to be – in both senses of the word – is at any one of the utterly chic, uber trendy beach clubs for which the region is renowned. Lapped by the languid Mediterranean and fanned by gentle sea breezes, the sheer choice of unashamedly glamorous waterfront oases on the Costa del Sol leaves the rest of the world’s hotspots in the shade!...
With literally scores of pristine Blue Flag beaches, and blessed by an incomparable annual average of 320 sunshine days, for residents of Southern Spain it’s taken as read that the sand and the sea are major attractions that are yours to enjoy virtually all year round.
An early morning dip, jog or workout to set you up for the day… a leisurely lunch at an informal chiringuito, a gentle afternoon canter along the water’s edge, or an energetic game of volleyball – or bossaball, the latest craze sweeping the Coast – all are intrinsic to the coveted Mediterranean lifestyle by day… not to mention the fabulous choice of water sports on offer.
With long sultry evenings and balmy star-lit nights, all along the Coast the beach plays host to a wide programme of open-air concerts and gigs, firework displays, parties and barbecues… even theatre and film seasons.
But if you’d rather slip into your Manolos than flip flops, then simply head for one of the utopian beach clubs dotted along the waterfront between Marbella and Estepona, and surrender yourself body and soul to the ultimate hedonistic experience that awaits you. Designer beachwear and the ability to switch off, lay back and allow yourself to be throughly pampered in the most stylish of surroundings are de rigueur. The perfect prelude to moonlit wining and dining, followed by serious partying ‘til the sun comes up.
The breathtakingly beautiful Club de Playa La Ĉabane – at the swish 5-star GL Hotel Los Monteros on the eastern outskirts of Marbella - is open year round. Its 36 signature cabañas provide intimate spaces for chilling, relaxing and dining in style, and if you opt for a VIP sunbed, the price includes a half bottle of champagne, sunglasses, and towels.
As you lay back at peace with the world, the La Ĉabane Beach Boys and Girls will serve you with drinks and ice cream… and for the last word in unadulterated decadence, as the temperature heats up, they’ll gently spray you with deliciously cool, fragrant and refreshing rose-water.
The tropical world of Laguna Village, next to the Kempinski Resort Hotel Estepona, is a brand new beachfront shopping and leisure experience, surrounded by an 8,000 square metre park with more than 50 different species of palm trees and an oasis of water features. Opening this summer, it’s also the home of the Costa del Sol’s newest Club de Playa – PuroBeach – which, following in the footsteps of acclaimed PuroBeach Mallorca, styles itself as “a lifestyle sanctuary for the spiritual and cosmopolitan traveller.”
With sunrise yoga, meditation and breakfast, preceding lazy afternoons imperceptibly morphing into a pulsating party mood, this promises to be the hippest spot on the New Golden Mile, equipped with pool, spa, terrace and lounge, plus style statement Nomad Tents™ and sumptuous Nomad Beds™.
One of the largest and trendiest of beach clubs in Europe, Ocean Club Marbella is located on the western side of Puerto Banús. It boasts a 1,000 square metre swimming pool, four bars, a chill-out zone, two VIP day suites, a beach area with inviting loungers, and a restaurant serving Sushi, Thai, Indian, Indonesian and Creative Mediterranean cuisine as well as pizzas.
You can indulge yourself with spa treatments or a beachside massage, while the shopping gallery features the OC business centre and shop, Roberto di Camerino, Yanira and Bon Bon boutiques. Spain’s first Lamborghini Shop is due to launch here this year, and after a spot of chic retail therapy, you may also like to charter a yacht, private jet or helicopter.
Renowned as ‘the sexiest place on earth’, and voted Best Beach Club 2005, Nikki Beach Marbella is located at the legendary Don Carlos Hotel. Launched in Miami, and present in places such as St Tropez, St Barths, Hollywood and New York, it’s said that time loses all meaning at Nikki Beach.
With exotic bamboo beds, alcoves of tee-pees and gently swaying palms, this is where the beautiful people rub shoulders with the rich and famous. A unique fusion of style, glamour and sybaritism, you’ll always know when summer has officially arrived – it kicks-off each year with Nikki’s sensational White Party!
That’s just to get you started. There are several other fabulous beach clubs on the Coast, including The Hotel Puente Romano’s heavenly Suite del Mar, or the jet-set atmosphere of the Hotel Marbella Club. And then, of course, there’s a plethora of less refined alternatives with the emphasis on sport, action and family fun.FURTHER INFORMATION La Ĉabane www.monteros.com; Reservations, Tel: (+34) 952 861 199 PuroBeach www.purobeach.com Ocean Club Marbella www.oceanclubmarbella.net; Reservations, Tel: (+34) 952 908 137 Nikki Beach Marbella www.nikkibeach.com; Reservations, Tel: (+34) 952 836 239
