Food trucks, like those on show in Torremolinos this weekend, come in all shapes and sizes.

For this weekend only, Plaza de la Nogalera in Torremolinos plays host to the latest edition of “The Foodtruck Xperience”, offering passers-by the chance to sample delicacies from around the world…

Ten food trucks cruised into the town’s central plaza yesterday and will be up on blocks until the end of the food and music festival on Sunday evening. These participating kitchens on wheels hail from eight different countries and will be serving up a mixture of international street food, gourmet bites and emblematic national dishes from 7pm until 1am over the next three days.

Just to give you a flavour of the event… La Pequeña Habana (serving traditional Cuban food), Wonderfood (experts in stir fry, noodles and rice dishes), The Wurstruck (four different types of German sausage), The Trick Truck (serving authentic Mexican food) and La Yankeneeta (American hot dogs) are just some of the varied and colourfully-decorated mobile caterers.

Two live music shows per night will provide all the entertainment you need to accompany the delicious food on offer, which you will be able to wash down with a drink from the bar area at the very centre of the plaza.

The origins of the food truck go back to wartime in Europe and North America, where easily-preserved and staple foodstuffs were rationed or given to troops from mobile wagons and canteens at tactical locations on the front line.

Over the years, the concept has seen many a transformation and is now extremely big business. The success of the food truck is, ahem, rolling along full speed ahead, having found its (parking) space in popular culture. Exposure in television series, televised cooking competitions and even a presence along political campaign trails have all led to its increased popularity.

Nowadays, food trucks serve an estimated 2.5 billion people every day globally and, in the US alone, the market was thought to be worth over 2.7 billion dollars in 2017!

With its gastronomical offerings now ranging from simple street food to gourmet delicacies, many chefs look to gain notoriety through the pop-up restaurant and mobile kitchen phenomenon that has swept the international catering industry.

If you’re an expat and live in or around Torremolinos, or you happen to be visiting the town this weekend, why not stop by and take in the atmosphere of the festival… and don’t forget to leave us a comment below if you do!
