Alegría posterIn the run-up to the festive season – which in Spain kicks off with public holidays on 6 & 8 December and continues virtually unabated until 6 January – it’s something of a tradition that Málaga is the venue for a show-stopping pre-Christmas spectacular, and this year is no different.

No strangers to the capital of the Costa del Sol, Montreal-based Cirque du Soleil return to Málaga next month with their box office hit production Alegría…

coincidentally meaning ‘joy’ in Spanish – which runs at the city’s Palacio de Deportes Martín Carpena sports stadium from 1 – 4 December.

Since premiering in Montreal in 1994, Alegría has wowed more than 10 million people worldwide with its cast of 55 performers and musicians from 15 different countries. The 150-minute show (with intermission) has “a baroque and operatic style with flamboyant costumes, original music performed live and an elaborate set enhancing the astonishing spectacle of athleticism and artistry.” The result is an impressive mix of skill, strength and speed combined with elegant – almost ethereal – performances.
