Málaga might only be Spain’s 5th largest city – after Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Sevilla – but the capital of the Costa del Sol certainly punches well above its weight when it comes to culture… particularly art.

The city’s world-famous Picasso Museum and renowned CAC (Centre of Contemporary Art) were joined in March of this year by the prestigious Carmen Thyssen Museum, and Modern Tradition in the Carmen Thyssen Collection: Monet, Picasso, Matisse, Miró is the very first temporary exhibition to be held there, and runs until 16 October.

Spanish art from 1890 to 1960 forms the main body of impressionist, surrealist and abstract works at this must-visit showcase, which also features paintings by French masters Monet and Matisse, the objective being to strike up a dialogue between Spain’s foremost artists, Picasso and Miró, and the European and American trends that played a key role in shaping Spanish modernism.

The Carmen Thyssen Museum is open Tuesdays to Thursdays from 10am to 8pm; Fridays & Saturdays from 10am to 9pm; and Sundays from 10am to 8pm.
