Málaga’s airport is already very busy and very modern, but plans are underway to boost its capabilities even further.

Spanish state-owned operator of the nation’s airports, Aena, has revealed that a new €6 million improvement and modernisation project will soon get underway at Málaga’s Terminal 2.

Comsa, a construction firm that specialises in bringing airports up to date, has been awarded the contract to improve this unloved section of Málaga airport…

Works are expected to take 20 months to complete, and will bring Terminal 2 in line with Terminal 3, modernising the departures area, the check-in foyer, arrivals and the intermediate floors to the north and south, the company confirmed.

Once all necessary upgrades on the airport are complete, annual capacity will increase to 25.9 million passengers a year, while the number of flights that Málaga airport will be able to handle will rise to 180,000, making it one of Europe’s busiest hubs.

Aena has stressed that the works are necessary and disruption will be minimal. The longer term aim is to enable Málaga airport to handle expected increases in traffic and volume over the coming years as Spain continues to strengthen its reputation as an excellent year-round holiday destination.
