Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé

Spanish soprano Montserrat Caballé performs in Marbella on 23 June in a fundraiser for Children for Peace.

Marbella has really pulled out all the stops this year to bring an absolutely unprecedented line-up of Spanish and international megastars to the Coast all summer long.

First up – on 23 June at the Hotel Puente Romano Tennis Club – world renowned Spanish soprano and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Montserrat Caballé will be hitting the high notes to raise funds for three different Children for Peace projects, in Ethiopia, Mali and Palestine.

Performing in Marbella alongside her soprano daughter Montserrat Martí and Russian tenor Nikolay Baskov, Montserrat Caballé first shot to international fame in 1965 when she received a 25-minute standing ovation for her role in Donizetti’s ‘Lucrezia Borga’ at New York’s Carnegie Hall and has been delighting audiences ever since.

Beyond operatic circles though, where she’s an exponent of the bel canto repertoire, she’s probably best known for famously duetting with Queen’s Freddie Mercury on their 1988 hit single ‘Barcelona’, followed by an album of the same name. ‘Barcelona’ later became the anthem of the 1992 Summer Olympics hosted by her native city, and she also performed the song live – accompanied by a recording of Freddie Mercury – as a prelude to the 1999 UEFA Champions League football final in Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium.
