Spain clinches 4th spot in quality of life expat survey

Spain is one of the finest places in the world to be an expat, according to a recent survey by expat network InterNations, which polled more than 14,300 expats globally about their experiences of living abroad…

More than 174 nationalities living in 191 countries were asked to rate their quality of life based on a handful of key factors, including leisure options, safety and security, health and wellbeing and personal happiness.

With all of these metrics taken into consideration, Spain ranked fourth globally, performing exceptionally well on many fronts, not least the Ease of Settling In index, which indicates how welcome expats are made to feel once they decide to put down roots in Spain.

This friendliness goes some way towards easing many traditional expat fears, and is aided by Spain’s affordability, excellent climate, high levels of safety and modern infrastructure that makes getting around – and, crucially, enjoying cheap flights home – such a breeze.

Only three countries were able to top Spain. In third place was Japan, where expats largely enjoy its peaceful lifestyle and high standard of medical care. Second spot went to Austria, where the country’s clean air, good infrastructure and solid job prospects all appeal, while Taiwan topped the ranking, offering high salaries, good levels of safety and plenty of leisure options.

For many would-be expats from the UK and elsewhere in Europe, however, Spain is the de facto number one location given its proximity, clement weather and variety of cities and locations in which to live.

And once affordability is factored in, even those expats who are not moving overseas for a high paying job can find solace, comfort and the chance of a good life in Spain.
