Spain reopen borders on June 21

If you are already a subscriber to our Weekly Property Update you would have seen that during the lockdown in Spain, we added some messages to our newsletter to keep you up to date with what was going on during the Coronavirus pandemic. With each individual country taking very different steps to control the spread of the virus, we felt it was important to let you know how things were going here in Spain. And while we are all trying to get back to some form of normality, whether that be an old normality or new, we wanted to send you all one final message to hopefully make it a bit clearer as to when we can welcome you back to Spain once again.

The Spanish Prime Minister new decision

The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, recently announced that he was bringing forward the opening of the Spanish borders by over a week, allowing travellers from the European Union (Schengen area with the exception of Portugal but including the UK) to enter Spain from next June 21. This also coincides with the date that Spain will officially exit the state of alarm, opening up the country once again to foreign tourists. Sánchez also pointed out that travellers arriving into the country will no longer be required to stay in 14-day quarantine, making travelling to Spain much like it was before the Coronavirus pandemic. Travellers from outside the Schengen area countries will be allowed into the country without the need to self-quarantine from July 1 onwards, if there is a reciprocal agreement on travel.

The border with Portugal will remain closed until July 1, Sanchez explained to the presidents at the request of the Portuguese government. That day, a ceremony will be held at the border with the participation of Felipe VI, Pedro Sánchez, the President and the Prime Minister of Portugal.

Very good news for tourists and property owners

The Spanish government has already authorized 10,900 German tourists without prior testing to enter Spain from June 15 to the Balearic Islands. It will be done as part of a pilot project before the borders are opened throughout Spain. This pilot project also will allow to German tourists who have a second home on Mallorca to enjoy their summer time. This will activate the economy and test the current situation in popular cities such as Palma de Mallorca.
